Subwoofer Tests Velodyne DD-18

The Test Rig:

PC: HP Pavilion t781.uk (3.4 GHz P4 HT, 1GB DDR, 250GB HD)

Soundcard: Lynx Studio Technologies Ltd, Lynx 2B

Microphone: Linearx M53 Precision Acoustic Measurement Microphone, Serial Number: 201467

Calibrator: Rion NC-74

Software: WinMLS 2004 Professional Level 6

Other: Auralex GRAMMA Subwoofer Platforms

We calibrated the microphone using the Rion calibrator (shown below) so that it would correctly plot absolute SPLs on the frequency response graphs. This calibrator delivers a precision 1000Hz tone at 94dB +/- 0.3dB.

The microphone has a 130dB maximum SPL capability; far more than we actually need for our purposes. It has its own built-in battery-operated pre-amp and is supplied with a file of correction values which was fed into WinMLS to correct for the slight variation in the frequency response of the mic and pre-amp. The sound card has a very flat frequency response to better than +/- 0.1dB across the frequency range we were working at. Overall, the frequency response accuracy of the whole rig is better than +/- 1dB from 10Hz to 40kHz.

The subs were each placed on Auralex Gramma Platforms to provide some degree of protection from the rough playground surface.
